Shutters
When and how to include shutters in your assessment

Last Update 5 days ago

Shutters are now recognised in RdSAP assessments, with specific guidelines for their inclusion to accurately reflect their impact on a dwelling's energy performance.
This is a notable update in RdSAP 10 and Version 12 of the conventions, which came into effect on May 1, 2025.
Relevant Convention
The inclusion of shutters and their specific requirements are detailed in Convention 3.11b of the RdSAP 10 Conventions document.
This convention highlights that the performance of internal or external shutters, with or without insulation, is now recognised in RdSAP, referring to Table 24 for their performance.
For shutters to be included in an energy assessment, they must meet the following criteria:
They are hinged panels, typically made of timber, designed to fully cover a window.
When open, they generally sit within the window reveal.
They must be operational and confirmed by opening them during the survey.
If they are insulated, evidence must be provided to prove the presence and type of insulation, such as a thin insulation material (e.g., aerogel blanket) within the panels, often finished with a timber covering.
Impact on Assessment
The ability to record shutters, particularly insulated ones, allows for a more accurate representation of a dwelling's thermal performance in the EPC.
This change reflects a broader effort within RdSAP 10 to incorporate more detailed information about building elements, leading to more precise energy ratings and recommendations.
